Black History Month 2026: Black Fatherhood
Day 19
A common stereotype of Black men is we’re terrible fathers. It’s simply not true. While it is true many Black fathers aren’t married to the mothers of their children, we still show up for our kids! Multiple studies have confirmed Black fathers are the most present in their children’s life (see the images).
The one of the reasons racists have perpetuated this negative stereotype about Black fathers is allows them to dismiss systemic racism as individual failures. For example, when the Ferguson protests happened in 2014, many anti-Black/pro-cop racists claimed Black people were being shot due to a “failure in the Black family structure.” A “failure” that doesn’t actually exist.
